First seen by amateur astronomers Alan Hale, and Thomas Bopp, the comet drew international attention as it was the brightest that had been seen in the sky in several decades, and because it endured for so long in the night sky. The comet Hale-Bopp, likely the most studied and/or observed comet in human history, was visible to casual observers for nearly 18 months as it swooped past, coming as close as 1.315 AU (1AU = one Sun-Earth distance) to us, before once again heading off into the far reaches of our solar system.
